Interview with Race Car Driver Arie Luyendyk Jr (continued from front page)

What was it like growing up with an Indy car racing father? Was he nervous teaching you to drive? Growing up in a racing family is great. I went to most of the races and the sport became a part of life. The people at the track were like family so it was no surprise when I wanted to be a driver. My father was very laid back about my driving. He always let me find my own way of doing things and would let me learn from my mistakes. Karting was always a passion of mine and this made the transition to driving on the road an easier one.
When you first started driving (non racing), what was the most challenging skill to learn and how did you master it? The most challenging skill to learn while daily driving was patience. Patience is something that every young driver needs because driving fast just gets you into trouble!
3. So did you ever wreck the family car-on the track or off?
I have been in an accident before because I fell asleep at the wheel!! I was 16 and had just raced that day, I was so exhausted and I definitely learned my lesson. I will always make sure if I am at all tired just to pull over and take a nap.
4. What things have you learned in racing that can be applied to new drivers?
Racing teaches you so many skills that can be applied on the road. Racing teaches you car control, faster reaction time, predictability in other drivers around you, and much more. Racing has made me realize how dangerous the daily driver really is.
5. What's your top three tips for teen drivers?
My three tips would be:
- Always be alert!!! That means no cell phones!
- Don't ever drive drunk!!!
- Keep the speed down!!!
6. Tell us about making your new video called Road Skillz.
Making Road Skillz was great! I was excited to get involved in this important DVD. There isn't anything else on the market like it and making the DVD was very fulfilling for me. It is modern DVD with music, racing shots, and helpful tips for every driver!

Road Skillz, a revolutionary new type of driving skills DVD, is aimed specifically at 16-25 year old drivers. Arie Luyendyk Jr., featured in the DVD and aided by other world-renowned professional racecar drivers, takes a totally different approach to driver’s education. Unlike the standard “scare tactics” and “lecture” type driver education videos, Road Skillz incorporates real life situations, a wide array of cars, CGI animation, popular music, and real-life re-enactments of what to do and what not to do in a crisis situation to effectively teach under-experienced teen and novice drivers the critical knowledge they need to handle today’s cars and roadway risks.
